Casualty Adjuster

Investigates, negotiates and settles claims for an insurance company in Connecticut. One license carrying four lines of authority, examined separately on each. It is the whole of the insurer's side of a claim here: Connecticut's license type list names no independent, staff, crop or emergency adjuster, and the policyholder's side is the separate Public Adjuster license.

Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. There is no pre-licensing course among them: this license is qualified for by sitting the examination or a license held in another state.

  1. Route 1 Pass the paper for the line of authority you want

    State exam required

    The Department states the zero in its own words on this license's page, "Connecticut does not require pre-licensing education for this license type", and again under Initial Education Requirements, "No pre-licensing required". The examination vendor's handbook agrees by omission: none of the four adjuster papers is on its list of examinations that need a pre-licensing certificate or a waiver letter at the door. Four papers, one per line of authority, each $70: All Lines at 12-CT-09 and All Lines except Workers' Compensation at 12-CT-10, both two hours, and Auto Only at 12-CT-12 and Workers' Compensation Only at 12-CT-11, both one hour. The higher two include the lower: All Lines includes workers' compensation, and All Lines except Workers' Compensation still includes auto. Moving up takes the paper for the higher line; moving down takes an email to cid.licensing@ct.gov with the subject line "Downgrade Adjuster". No continuing education is required of a Connecticut resident casualty adjuster and no fingerprints are taken.

  2. Route 2 Hold an adjuster license in another state, or designate Connecticut as your home state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • An adjuster license in any other state, which Connecticut accepts without an examination because it is reciprocal with all states

    The Department writes it plainly, "Connecticut is reciprocal with all states, including Designated Home State (DHS)", and it issues non-resident designated home state status to anybody who lives in a state that licenses no adjuster at all. Somebody claiming designated home state status is not reciprocating and sits the Connecticut paper like a resident.
