The Colorado Temporary License

Section 10-2-410(1), C.R.S. lets the commissioner issue a temporary license for up to one hundred and eighty days without an examination where it is necessary for the servicing of an insurance business, in five cases: to the surviving spouse, next of kin, executor or an employee of a producer who has died; to the surviving spouse, next of kin, employee or legal guardian of a producer who has become disabled; to a member, employee or officer of a licensed agency who is themselves a licensed producer, on the death or disability of the individual registered against the agency license; to the designee of a producer entering active service in the armed forces; and to anyone else where the commissioner deems the public interest will best be served. Section 10-2-202(1)(b) exempts the applicant from prelicensing education in the same terms. Section 10-2-410(2) is the other half and it is discretionary throughout: the commissioner may limit the authority of a temporary licensee in any way, may require a sponsor who is a licensed producer or an insurer and who assumes responsibility for everything the temporary licensee does, may impose other requirements, and may revoke by order. The license may not continue after the owner or the personal representative disposes of the business. It costs nothing: the Division's fee table prints No Fee against it and takes the request by email rather than through Sircon.
