Every way to qualify

More than one route leads to this license, and which one you take changes what you study and whether you sit the exam. They are listed in full because the course is only the first of them.

  1. Route 1 Take the 50-hour course

    State exam required

    • 50 hours of pre-licensing education for the Casualty line, approved by the Department , completed within 1 year

Fifty hours, of which the regulation prescribes ten by subject: three on insurance industry ethics, three on Colorado insurance law that is general and four on Colorado insurance law for this line. Someone taking more than one line takes the three ethics hours once. The certificate is good for a year from completion and the Division will not accept an older one, so the course has to be retaken rather than refreshed. The provider transmits the proof to the Division electronically, which discharges the applicant's own duty to send it. Holding a designation does not shorten the fifty hours, and it does shorten the examination. A CPCU is exempt from the examination except the Colorado law portion for property, casualty or health coverage, under section 10-2-403(1)(d). That is a partial exemption rather than a route of its own, so it sits on this route rather than beside it: the holder still takes the course and still sits part of the exam.

  2. Route 2 Have held this line in Colorado or another state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • A license for the Casualty line, previously held in Colorado or in another state

C.R.S. 10-2-403(1)(a): an applicant previously licensed for the same lines of authority "in this state or another state shall not be required to complete any prelicensing education or examination". Read the next sentence before assuming a deadline: the currently-licensed, twelve-month and good-standing conditions are introduced with "This exemption is only available to a nonresident applicant if", so they bind a nonresident and the statute puts no clock on a resident at all. Regulation 1-2-5's own section 10 states the reciprocal-state version more narrowly, with ninety days rather than twelve months and a form certifying knowledge of Colorado law, and the statute is the one recorded here. 3. Route 3 Move to Colorado holding this line in your old home state

    Exempt from the state exam

    • 90 days of establishing legal residence in Colorado, having held the Casualty line as a licensed producer in the previous state

C.R.S. 10-2-403(1)(b.5). Neither prelicensing education nor an examination for a line already held, and the ninety days run from establishing residence. The subsection reserves the commissioner's power to say otherwise by regulation. 4. Route 4 Reinstate a Colorado license inactive for a year or less

    State exam required

    • A canceled or expired Colorado resident producer license carrying the Casualty line, inactive for one year or less

C.R.S. 10-2-202(1)(a) exempts a reinstatement from the fifty hours where the license has been inactive for a year or less. It is in the prelicensure education part of the article and not in the examination part, so the examination is still owed. 5. Route 5 Have satisfied your former home state's prelicensing education for this line

    State exam required

    • Previously licensed in a former resident state and having completed or satisfied that state's prelicensure education for the Casualty line

C.R.S. 10-2-202(1)(c) is a second and wider door than 10-2-403(1)(a): it asks only that the applicant was licensed in the former resident state and satisfied that state's prelicensure education, with no good standing test and no clock. It sits in the education part of the article, so it drops the fifty hours and leaves the examination, and most people who qualify for it also qualify under 10-2-403(1)(a), which drops both. Cited to the Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, which the Office of Legislative Legal Services publishes as one HTML file per title with no per-section address, so the section is named here rather than linked.
