The Alaska Trainee Independent Adjuster license

Trainee Independent Adjuster

The way into the adjuster license for somebody with no claims experience. The employer applies for it, the examinations come afterwards on a four, eight and twelve month clock, and missing any of them means the director revokes it.

Every way to qualify

  1. Route 1 Be employed by a licensed independent adjuster who applies for you

No state exam for this license

    • Employment by a licensed independent adjuster who submits the trainee’s application and fee to the director and receives the license, and who thereafter directs and supervises the trainee, answers for everything the trainee does, and documents that supervision in the file

AS 21.27.840 is the only trainee license left in the chapter. Trainee insurance producers, trainee managing general agents, trainee reinsurance intermediary brokers, trainee reinsurance intermediary managers and trainee surplus lines brokers were all repealed by ch 96 SLA 2004, and the trainee adjuster survived that cut alone. The license goes to a resident who lacks the experience with handling loss claims but otherwise meets AS 21.27.830, and it is the employing licensed independent adjuster who submits the application and receives the license, not the trainee. What makes it unlike any apprentice license on this site is that the examinations come after the license rather than before, on a clock the statute writes as a duty on the director to revoke: the state laws and regulations paper within four months of the effective date, the paper on knowledge and competence in handling loss claims and the duties of a licensee within eight, and everything else within twelve. Miss one and the director "shall revoke". Somebody revoked on that ground may apply again only after passing both papers. Pass them all and the trainee has thirty days to apply for the full license. While it lasts the license is narrow: the trainee may take part in a factual investigation and a tentative closing of a loss subject to the employer’s review and final determination, and may not do even that away from the place of business unless a licensed independent adjuster physically accompanies them.
