The Alabama Managing General Agent license

Managing General Agent

Exercises general supervision over an insurer's Alabama business and appoints and terminates its producers. It is licensed and priced per insurer represented and per class of insurance handled, so a manager working four insurers holds four licenses and pays four times.

  1. Route 1 Be appointed by an insurer, for each insurer and each class

No state exam for this license

    • Appointment as an independent contractor by one or more insurers for the principal purpose of exercising general supervision over the insurer's business in Alabama, with authority to appoint and terminate producers for it; a separate appointment and a separate license are required for each insurer represented and for each class of insurance that insurer handles here

The Department's own definition carries both of the things worth knowing. First, the negatives: a managing general agent "shall not be required to take and pass an examination nor be a resident of Alabama", and the authority "shall not include countersignature privileges". Second, the unit: "A managing general agent must be licensed for each insurer represented and for each class of insurance handled by the insurer in this state."The fee schedule prices it the same way, $405 in total per insurer, made up of a $30 application fee, a $125 license fee and a $250 examination fee, with a $75 annual renewal per insurer. The $250 examination fee is not an examination fee in the sense a reader expects: the page says there is no examination and directs questions to the Examination Division, which is the Department's financial examination arm. Alabama licenses in a unit smaller than the state, and it counts insurers where Idaho's title agent counts counties and three dozen portable electronics and self-storage licenses here count locations. Chapter 6A of Title 27 governs the relationship between the manager and the insurer and creates no separate qualification.

No national seller sells a course for this license. The Department states on its own page that a managing general agent "shall not be required to take and pass an examination", so there is no paper to prepare for.
